Workshop Description

The participants of the workshop will have a hands on collaborative learning experience.   They will discover aspects of the layout and construction techniques involved in building the sculptural volume from metal.   Each person in the workshop will cut, weld, sand and grind on the sculpture. There will be no spectators in this workshop.   Everyone will do what they are capable of doing.

December 8-10 Stage One: Orientation, Parts Preparation & Armature Construction
Friday December 8 10am-8pm (Orientation & Build Day) 8-10hrsWe will meet and get to know each other and what we are preparing to build.   We will have an orientation of the equipment and how to use it.   We will go over the basic skills of welding and fabrication.   We will evaluate the plans for the sculpture and how it all fits together.      We will split into groups and work on layout and parts preparations for the sculpture.  
Saturday December 9 10am-8pm (Build Day) 8-10hrsWe will continue with layout and parts preparation.   We work together in shifts welding the armature.
Sunday December 10 10am-8pm (Build Day) 8-10hrsWe will finish welding the armature.   We will, as a group, clean up the space we used to build the sculpture.

December 15-17 Stage Two: Skinning the Form
Friday December 15 10am-8pm (Build Day) 8-10hrsWe will lay out the materials to fit the armature.   We will cut and prep the metal for the metal skin.
Saturday December 16 10am-8pm (Build Day) 8-10hrsWe will work together in shifts placing and tack welding the metal skins.
Sunday December 17 10am-8pm (Build Day) 8-10hrsWe will work together in shifts to complete welding and the finishing of   the sculptural sections.   We will, as a group, clean up the space we used to build the sculpture.

December 22-24 Stage Three: Finishing Stage
Friday December 22 10am-8pm (Build Day) 8-10hrsWe will work together designing the patterns to be cut into the sculpture.
Saturday December 23 0am-8pm (Build Day) 8-10hrsWe will layout the designed patterns on the sculpture and begin cutting them.
Sunday December 24 10am-8pm (Finish Day) 8-10hrsWe will work together doing finishing and touch up work to the piece.   We will assemble and admire the finished product.   We will disassemble the sculpture and prepare it for shipment to the Africa Burns site.    We will, as a group, clean up the space we used to build the sculpture.

There will be no smoking, drugs, or alcohol in the workshop . It is suggested to bring a lunch and/or snack with you.   There will be a one hour break in the middle of each day.
